This year’s event has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 15, and Sunday, Oct. 16. After gaining approval from Roxboro City Council earlier this week, the Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce has officially an nounced the rescheduled dates for the annual Personality Festi val in Uptown Roxhoro. The 32nd annual event will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, and Sun day, Oct. 16. Personality was originally scheduled for Friday, Aug. 26, and Saturday, Aug. 27; however, weather uncertainties related to Hurricane Irene forced the post ponement of the event. Initially, organizers planned to reschedule Personality for Fri day, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 16, Roxboro Area Chamber of Com merce President Marcia O’Neil said the Friday, Oct. 14, date con flicted with homecoming at Per son High School, though. O’Neil told The Courier-Times that in addition to receiving approval from Roxhoro City Council, Personality organizers also received “the blessings” of Long Memorial United Method ist Church and Roxhoro Bap tist Church to hold the event on See?lK%Onm\\,Pagel2 2011 SAT scores released, but can’t be compared to 2010 BY GREY PENTECOST COURIER-TIMES STAFF WRITER gieypentecost@roxboro-courler.com SAT reports came in this week for public schools, hut because of a change in the re porting of scores, the 2011 data can’t be compared to the results reported in 2010. According to the N.C. De partment of Public Instruc tion (DPI), under the College Board’s new rules, 2011 reports included all test-takers through June, while previous years’ re ports only included those stu dents who took the test through March. Test-takers were includ ed in the annual cohort for test administrations through June in 2010, but the College Board only reported scores through March. North Carolina’s unem ployment rate rose slightly in August to 10.4 percent, accord ing to information released Fri day by the state’s Employment Security Commission (ESC). The state’s jobless rate in July was 10.1 percent, which was up from 9.9 percent in June. In the three months prior to June, North Carolina’s unem ployment rate had held steady at 9.7 percent. Friday’s release detailing the state’s unemployment rate for August noted that the labor market retracted last month and even with an employment increase of 16,500 workers, the unemployment rate for August was 10.4 percent. “Since January, the data shows private sector job growth,” ESC Chairman Lynn R. Holmes said. “The Employ ee UN EMPLOYMENT, Page 12 City gives nod to MCNC’s plan to link schools to high speed Internet network BY PHYLISS BOATWRIGHT COURIER-TIMES STAFF WRITER pboatwrigbt@toxboro-coutier.com The City of Roxboro will al low Microelectronics Center of North Carolina (MCNC) to install fiber optic cable in city rights of way in order for MCNC to link public schools and Piedmont Community Col lege to a high speed Internet network.
